This is a story of a girl who is Japanese but lives in America. The setting of the story is right after the attack on Pearl Harbor. Mitsi (the girl) and her family have to leave, but in all this her friends are now being mean to her and the worst of all she has to leave her dog, Dash. Dash is her only friend, but she has to leave. Once she gets to the camp, she is upset. Then she meets a friend, Debby. Dash is staying with her neighbor, and she writes to the owner about him. But while at camp her older brother's friend is a bad influence. His friend steals and lies. Mitsi learns to get through hard things even when it seems like you can't. It is really good and even better for dog-lovers.
