huge presentation

i wrote an essay on missionaries for school. we put onto note cards and practiced it so much we memorized it. then, we had a HUGE presentation with judges and a fancy background with the idaho flag (esto perpetua) and drawings of sacajawea, solders, and indians. i did awesome and i got on my scoring sheet i got all advanced except for one that was proficent. yay! here the speech is:

missionaries were people who taught religon and helped westward expansion. they also changed Ntives forever.
missionaries took off in the 1830's. this happened because two nez peirce indians had heard of the bible and went to william clark. they thought the bible would give them white man's power. many churches heard this and sent missionaries out to Idaho. a methodist missionary society journal said " Hear! Hear! who will respond to the call from beyond the rocky mountains... let two men without families live with them and teach Christ to them"
the first missionary in oregon country was jason lee. he taught many indians and stayed in fort hall. some famous missionaries were the whitmans and the spauldings. Narcissa whitman and Eliza Spaulding were the first white women in Idaho.
several religons sent missionaries. the Catholic missionaries moved out to the west. a preist Father Pierre Jean de Smet was a leader. They wore long black robes and built the Cataldo Misson. another type of religon was presbyterian. the whitmans were presbyterian. they taught natives and wanted them to have a new way of life. When Mormons came to Idaho they were fleein from other states, but they ended up teaching their relligon too.
some people said tht all of the many missionaries helped Natives while others said that they hurt their traditions. missionaries taught natives to be like white men. jesuit father nickolas point said "hands doing uty for handkercheif, knife, fork, and spoon; in feedin repulsive sounds were emitted from the mouth, nose, and windpipe". he completely changed he Natives. therefore, to some people he changed their traditions.
in summary, missionaries changed Natives and helped westward expansion by establishing churches to help settle the west.
P.S. i wish my grandparents were there but then i would have had a bigger audience so ya.

  2. Gee, Hannah, that was an awesome report. It seems like you studied a lot about all the different missionaries who came to Idaho. Your state has a rich heritage. I'm impressed. You deserved your good grade.
